Facial Proportions

Whether we find a face attractive or not depends on its proportions (basic harmony). However, the mathematically precisely calculated facial proportions only represent a certain basic harmony. With regard to proportions, the following basic rules apply to a beautiful face. In a detailed discussion between patient and doctor, it is discussed which parts should be corrected.

Beneficial asymmetry

A more detailed analysis of a face shows that the two halves of the face are not completely symmetrical. Small differences between the two halves of the face make a face appear much more expressive and interesting. Larger differences, on the other hand, disturb the basic harmony and make a face appear less attractive. but also on its small asymmetries.

Age changes in the face area

Forehead

“The sullen facial expression”: The expression of a face is primarily determined by the configuration and position of the eyebrows and lids. If the eyebrows are not precisely defined, the face loses harmony and expressiveness. In the course of aging, various structures in the face decrease. This is most noticeable in the area of the eyebrows. The sunken eyebrows give the face a somber, tired expression

Eyes

“The tired look”: sagging eyelids, sunken eyes and dark circles under the eyes give the impression of tiredness and weariness. In the course of facial aging, there is not only excess skin in the upper eyelid area, but also excess or insufficient fat tissue (“deeply sunken eyes”). In the lower eyelid area, in addition to sagging skin and excess fat tissue, color changes (“circle under the eyes”) and/or changes in the area of the lower eyelid/cheek border (“bags under the eyes”) must be taken into account.

Nose

In the course of aging, the nose often grows late, with a strengthening of an existing nasal hump and lengthening of the nose.

Cheeks (Middle Face)

Due to the sinking of the cheek fat and the facial muscles, there is an increased protrusion of the lower eyelid with the formation of dark circles and/or bags under the eyes. In the cheek area, there is a narrowing of the cheek area. In addition, the nasolabial folds stand out more clearly, at the end of this fold it continues as a clearly more visible marionette fold to the edge of the lower jaw, and here the skin-soft tissue coat that has slipped down overhangs the edge of the lower jaw in the sense of so-called “Basset cheeks”. The so-called midface triangle is reversed. The tip is down on the youthful face, the tip is up on the aging face.

Mouth

“The sad facial expression”: drooping corners of the mouth, thinned lips and deepened wrinkles around the mouth give the impression of dissatisfaction and/or sadness. As part of aging in the mouth area, there is a reduction in height of the upper and lower jaw and a loss of volume in the cheek and lip area. The upper lip appears longer, the red of the lips significantly narrower, the wrinkles in the mouth area deepen, and excess skin develops in the area of the lower jaw (“Bassett’s cheeks”).

Neck

One of the most obvious signs of aging is a less toned neck. As we age, skin loses the elasticity it had when we were younger. (Transverse) folds and even small skin bags that hang down (“turkey neck”) develop. In addition, the skin muscle (platysma)
