FAQs for Hand Rehabilitation & Hand Therapy

What is Hand Therapy?

Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. It is a merging of occupational and physical therapy theory and practice that combines comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the upper limb with function and activity.

Hand therapy is a form of physiotherapy and occupational therapy that focuses on the assessment and treatment of injuries and conditions of the hand and arm, optimizing its functional use.

The hand therapist effectively provides postoperative rehabilitation, non-operative or conservative intervention, preventive care and industrial ergonomic consultation.

Why is Hand Therapy better than Physiotherapy?

Hand function is one of the three basic requirements that are crucially important for the independence of a person. Because of this importance, hand therapy should not be delivered by general physiotherapist or occupational therapist, but by a highly specialized and trained Hand Therapist.

Given the complexities of the hand, having a therapist with advanced training in the hand/upper extremity to treat your injury or condition ensures your recovery is fueled by
targeted experience and knowledge for this important part of the body.

When should you start hand therapy?

Hand therapy should be started as early as possible. Early treatment helps prevent complications that can prolong the treatment process. Start time rehabilitation depends on the nature of the problem and should be determined by the treating Hand surgeon.

What are the most common hand therapy treatments?

Techniques may vary, but some common treatments from a hand therapist may
include:

  • Swelling reduction
  • Scar management
  • Desensitization (especially after peripheral nerve injuries)
  • Splinting
  • Hands-on strengthening exercises
  • Active mobilization
  • Return to work education and assistance
What are the main Goals of Hand Therapy?

The benefits of these treatments include:

  • decreased pain
  • increased range of motion
  • improved strength and functionality
  • improves aesthetics
  • return to normal activity (ultimate goal of hand therapy)
Is Hand therapy painful?

Hand therapy exists to lessen pain, not make it worse. That being said, sometimes working muscles will cause soreness after treatment is over. Stretching may also be uncomfortable, but any tenderness usually dissipates within a day.

What are the side effects of Hand therapy?

You can experience pain that might lead to pain and poor motivation. Discuss this with your therapists or doctor. You can also experience swelling along with pain. Ask your therapists whether you can use ice pack post session of therapy.

How long does physical therapy take for hand?

The time it takes to complete physical therapy depends on the severity, type of injury and your specific needs. Our therapists will create a personalized treatment plan (typically including an exercise program) that can extend weeks or months, depending on the progress of recovery and other factors.
